As momentum built for multinational gas giants to pay their fair share of export tax, we heard from athletes keen to share their support for the push to see these companies pay their fair share.
At FrontRunners, we were interested to know if the widespread support for a 25% tax on gas exports in the first half of 2026 was reflected across the wider sport community. As our CEO Dave Morris said, where better to find out than in the front bar, on a big night of AFL and NRL.
From the Last Man Standing next to Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, through legendary footy pubs the Henson in Marrickville, Melbourne’s Great Northern Hotel and on to the West Oak a short walk from Adelaide Oval, we got in touch with great community footy pubs around the country, and set out to meet fans where they were.
Armed with a QR code on some quickly-designed coasters, we asked fans a single yes or no question: Should Australia introduce a 25% tax on gas export revenue?
Overwhelmingly, they said yes – 83% of responses were for the tax.
With footy fans reflecting the clear support for this tax among the Australian community, it's fair to draw the conclusion that this issue isn't going anywhere, and may well hasten the end of business as usual for the fossil fuel industry.
